Former Miss Universe Nigeria and Miss South Africa contestant, Chidimma Adetshina, maintains that she was born in South Africa, while accusing authorities of unfairly targeting her.
Her immigration status remains uncertain after the Cape Town Regional Court postponed judgment in her deportation case.
Adetshina who believes that there’s an attempt to make an example out of her, briefly appeared in court today and will return for judgment on 27 February next year.
The magistrate said handing down judgment at this stage would not be in the interests of justice, as Adetshina has an appeal pending in the Western Cape High Court, which is set to be heard in May next year.
Adetshina says the spirit of Ubuntu should guide how people treat one another.
“But my message is not going to be one out of anger. South Africa is governed by the rule of law, and we should not allow xenophobia and misinformation to determine how people are going to be treated.
“Throughout this ordeal, I have availed myself of all appropriate legal recourse, and I will continue to respect and abide by each process.”
She says she applied through proper legal channels to have her immigration status and citizenship determined.

Chidimma calls for spirit of Ubuntu, claims she’s being targeted Lindiwe Mpanza
Adetshina was arrested in June after re-entering South Africa through the Lebombo Border Post in Mozambique with her minor child.
This was despite the Department of Home Affairs declaring her a prohibited person. The court also heard that she had not disclosed that she holds a Nigerian passport, as does her child.
Adetshina made headlines when she made it to the top 10 of Miss South Africa competition, with many questioning her nationality and whether she qualified to represent the country.
Mounting pressure prompted the Department of Home Affairs to investigate her background. The probe resulted in a can of worms being opened after it was found that her mother, Anabela Rungo, who had claimed to be South African, had allegedly committed identity fraud to obtain a South African identity documents.
The controversy led to Adetshina withdrawing from the Miss SA competition. She later represented Nigeria at Miss Universe after winning the Nigerian leg of the competition.

Chidimma should be in Lindela detention centre at a very least or prison. She entered the country illegally because she used her own interpretation of our laws.
The whole arrangements are making a straight forward case, a special case.

Why can’t Home Affairs simply resolve Chidimma Adetshina’s immigration status and, if she has no legal right to remain in South Africa, deport her through the proper legal process? She has Nigerian citizenship, so why fight to remain in a country where her legal status is being… pic.twitter.com/dKMlhViSyJ

The audacity of Chidimma Adetshina to make a statement as a identity thief and fraudster is so jarring. This is not a victory yet Chidimma Adetshina, you and your mother will pay. You will face the law for masquerading yourself as a South African #eNCAnews #ChidimmaAdetshina pic.twitter.com/jv02DYhgpg
