The Department of Home Affairs has put to rest rumours that a probe into identity theft allegations against Chidimma Adetshina’s mother has been dropped.

The hearsay had been sparked by a television interview of the president of Miss Universe Nigeria, Guy Murray-Bruce, who claimed that the 23-year-old former Miss SA contestant who is now vying for the Nigerian crown, also told him that she and her mother are South African.

Murray-Bruce says he has no idea whether this claim was cooked-up, calling the issue a bit twisted.

“I think it’s a case of: She was doing so well in the pageant, they wanted to get her out and they saw the opportunity to get her out. That’s how I see it,” adds Murray-Bruce.

Home Affairs Department Minister, Leon Schreiber, has since responded to this claim, assuring South Africans that the case is still being investigated.

“The investigation into this matter is active and ongoing, and further updates will be provided, only through official channels, including the Parliament. Don’t fall for social media untruths,” says Schreiber.

Adetshina withdrew from the Miss SA competition, just two days before the finale after the Patriotic Alliance took to the high court in Pretoria to seek an urgent interdict against her.

Her story has re-ignited the debate about the country’s immigration system, identity theft and marriages of convenience, which many blame for the migration crisis South Africa is grappling with, which increases the demand for goods and services; leads to cold cases as police often struggle to trace undocumented persons, among others.

The influx of undocumented migrants also stokes tension between foreign nationals and locals who have to fight for limited job opportunities amid a widening gap between the rich and the poor.
