2024 has truly been the year for music sensation and South Africa’s own girl, Tyla, snapping up awards left right and centre while being celebrated across the globe.

The Edenvale born star has taken the world by storm, with her catchy songs and dance moves, showing her versatility.

Tyla has become as household name, since dropping her hit song “Water” in 2023, which led to her rise to international stardom.

To show how much of a big deal the song became, it was the first solo in history to spend a year at number 1 on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart.

The song, which also earned the 22-year-old her first-ever Grammy, peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100.

The 22-year-old is also one of the most streamed female artists on Spotify for the year.

If that wasn’t enough, the singer and songwriter won several awards in 2024, showing how much of a star she has become.

Tyla scooped accolades at the Grammy’s, MTV’s Video Music Awards for “Water”, MTV Europe Music Awards, BET awards, Billboard Music Awards and the SAMAs.

She became the first South African artist and first African female artist to win a VMA award.

The pop star also this year, received the Global Force Award at the US music and entertainment magazine, Billboard, in New York and also graced the cover of Elle magazine’s October issue.

Tyla received multiple nominations and was up against stars such as Chris Brown, SZA, Tems, Usher Burna Boy, amongst many others.

About a week ago, she received two honours at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards in Los Angeles, just days after she performed at her sold out shows in Pretoria and Cape Town.

Tyla was a first-time finalist and received the same number of nominations as mega stars Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Post Malone.

There is no stopping this superstar as her self-titled LP became the first 2024 debut album released and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Tyla has also showed us how stylish she is, rocking up at events in jaw-dropping outfits ranging from her sand-sculpted gown at her very first Met Gala, where her Balmain gown, representing the sands of time, stole the show.

She then paid homage to R&B singer, Aaliyah, by donning an outfit inspired by her at the MTV EMAs, revealing that the late star was her idol.

The South African star has also partnered with many brands, including American fashion brand Gap, collaborated with Beats by Dr Dre and the American athletic apparel brand, Alo Yoga.

She even headlined the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in October, cementing her global status, once again.

In December, Tyla returned to South Africa for her first-ever South African concerts in Cape Town and Pretoria, which were sold. Organisers had to add another date for January 2025.

The artists rising star seems poised to continue its upward trajectory in the new year, with her fans hailing her for remaining true to herself and roots.

Limpopo-born Makhadzi is another South African who continues to fly the flag high.

She also made her mark this year by scooping the BET Viewers’ Choice: Best International Act.

Makhadzi beat Bellah, Cristale, Duquesa, Holly G, Jungeli, Oruam, Seyi Vibez and South Africa’s Tyler ICU, to scoop the award.

To end off her great year, she performed at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday in her one woman show, accompanied by a number of other artists, including Zola 7 and Master KG.

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie, also supported her gig, giving away tickets to the show.
