South African music sensation, Tyla, has once again the country proud after clinching the MTV Europe Music Awards.

The awards ceremony was held in Manchester. It made a return this year after last year’s event, which was originally hosted in Paris, France, was cancelled after the Israel-Hamas war started.

The 22-year-old’s latest award adds to the string of accolades the Grammy-award holder has won so far. Tyla is the winner of the Best Afrobeats Award, Best R&B Award and Best African Act Award and is currently the first African artist to win three awards in one night at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

Tyla’s latest honour comes after the young star released her self-titled album, which features her new song, “Push 2 Start.” She performed it at the event, as well as her biggest song yet, “Water”.

Her fourth nomination was in the category of Best New Act, but the award was given to Benson Boone.

Taking to stage with her sister, Sydney, to accept the Best Afrobeats Award – Tyla praised the other nominees, saying they have elevated genre.

The star was also praised for her choice of outfit, which was in honour of the late singer, Aaliyah, who wore the same version of the dress but in yellow at the 2000 MTV VMAs.

The young star, died in 2021 in a plane crash in the Bahamas at the age of 22, won two awards for “Best Female Video” and “Best Video from a film” for “Try Again” at the MTV VMAs, 24 years ago.

Tyla described her as one of her idols.

Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, gave Tyla a shoutout on social media in honour of her gesture.

Tyla also walked away with two BET Awards and a Grammy award this year.

Superstar, Taylor Swift, was also one of the big winners of the night. She clinched the Best Artist, Best Live, Best Video for “Fortnight”, featuring Post Malone and Best US Act awards.

Ariana Grande won the Best Pop accolade, while the Best Song Award went to Sabrina Carpenter won for “Espresso”.

Musician Rita Ora, who was hosting the awards, took the opportunity to pay an emotional tribute to Liam Payne.

The British singer-songwriter, who was a good friend to the late singer, described him as a kind person who was very helpful.

Payne died last month at age 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Argentina.

Three people are facing preliminary charges for crimes related to his death.

Social media has been congratulating Tyla for the strides she has made thus far in her career.
