Jub Jub misses court, warrant issued

A warrant of arrest has been issued for media personality, Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, after he failed to appear in court today.

Maarohanye’s legal representative told the Germiston Magistrates’ Court that he had been booked off for five days due to illness.

The warrant will, however, come into effect after 14 days if Jub Jub fails to provide the court with a plausible explanation for his absence.

The ‘Ndikhokhele’ hitmaker is accused of firing a shot in the direction of an e-hailing driver, outside a complex in Edenvale in June, after allegedly accusing the driver of having an affair with his girlfriend.

According to police, the e-hailing driver had transported a female passenger to a residence in Edenvale when he was allegedly confronted by the musician.

Jub Jub’s lawyer says they will apply for the warrant to be cancelled.

Maarohanye is currently out on R5,000 bail and faces charges of unlawfully discharging a firearm in public and kidnapping.

His lawyer maintains that Jub Jub was not carrying a firearm on the day of the incident, although he conceded that the object allegedly used did resemble a firearm.

“So, this matter is still a bit of a long way to go. Depending on the results of the ballistics in terms of his state of alleges, it looks like a firearm, which we believe it does look like a firearm, but it’s not a firearm.”

He added that Jub Jub initially faced a wider range of charges when Jub Jub was arrested, but these have since been reduced.

“It’s no longer hijacking or kidnapping. It has moved down to pointing out what looked like a firearm.  I think that is why the state is requesting postponement for them to determine whether what they have in their possession is actually a real firearm or, as they call it, a toy gun.”

Meanwhile, NPA spokesperson, Magaboke Mohlatlole, says the State is ready to proceed with the matter.

“The NPA confirms that the State is ready to proceed with the prosecution and remains committed to ensuring that the matter is dealt with fairly and in accordance with the law.”

The case will return to court on 7 September.
