‘We can’t march forever,’ says Ngizwe Mchunu after being dropped by March and March

Media personality, Ngizwe Mchunu, says while the anti-illegal immigration protests have yielded results, the reality is that they cannot march forever.

His remarks come after lobby group, March and March, announced it had cut ties with Mchunu, citing what it described as unacceptable behaviour.

Mchunu and the movement jointly led thousands of protesters through the streets of the country on 30 June, demanding the removal of undocumented foreign nationals.

Earlier this week, Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, Mmamoloko Kubayi revealed that the Border Management Authority (BMA) had processed close to 73,000 repatriations through the country’s various ports of entry.

The repatriations took place between 7 June and 14 July, marking one of South Africa’s largest repatriation and deportation campaigns in recent years.

However, Mchunu says he has no intention of collapsing the economy through prolonged demonstrations.

He also took aim at March and March leader, Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and fellow activist Phakelaumthakathi, saying they do not understand the consequences of protest because they have never been arrested.

“They don’t know jail. They are junior to me. They are excited about the situation, the limelight and the relevance,” Mchunu said.

March and March said it had launched an internal investigation into what it alleges were attempts by political role players and business cartels to infiltrate and destabilise the movement.

The organisation claims its investigation uncovered an alleged offer and acceptance of gratification in exchange for compromising the movement’s principles, prompting its decision to cut ties with Mchunu.
