Controversial businessman, Hangwani Morgan Maumela’s, luxury Ferrari SF90 is set to go under the hammer after the Pretoria High Court dismissed his latest bid to prevent the vehicle from being sold.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) confirmed on Thursday that the 2022 Blu Corsa Ferrari, valued at about R9.5 million, would be auctioned on Friday. This follows an unsuccessful legal bid by Maumela and the trustees of the MHR Maumela Family Trust to stop the sale.

The vehicle is among several luxury cars preserved in September 2025 as part of the SIU’s investigation into alleged corruption and maladministration at Tembisa Hospital.

In its ruling, the court found that Maumela and the trust had failed to establish a clear right to prevent the sale. They had also failed to demonstrate reasonable prospects of success on appeal or show that they would suffer irreparable harm if the auction proceeded.

The SIU says the proceeds from the Ferrari’s sale will be held in an interest-bearing trust account until the civil proceedings are concluded.

The auction forms part of the unit’s broader efforts to recover assets linked to the alleged looting of more than R2 billion from Tembisa Hospital.

The SIU uncovered widespread procurement irregularities during its investigation, with records indicating that service providers were unlawfully appointed.

The Ferrari is not the only luxury vehicle linked to Maumela that has drawn the unit’s attention.

Last week, the SIU conducted a search and seizure operation at a property in Midrand after receiving information that another luxury vehicle, a Bentley allegedly belonging to Maumela, was being kept there.

However, the Bentley was not found during the operation on 30 October.

SIU spokesperson, Selby Makgotho, said the unit would now consider instituting contempt of court proceedings against Maumela, who has yet to be criminally charged in connection with the matter.

“This is one of the critical issues that we obviously would not expect one to be charged overnight. It’s an investigation that started in 2024, and we’re looking at an amount of R2 billion worth of contracts. There were three key syndicates, and this contract was broken down into various subcontracts, so all in all, that by itself is due to take time and because of the daily case complexities thereof,” Makgotho said.

The Bentley and Ferrari are among eight vehicles at the centre of the SIU’s asset recovery efforts.
