The High Court in Johannesburg has granted the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) a forfeiture order over assets worth approximately R326 million linked to businessman, Hangwani Morgan Maumela.
The NPA said the order follows a preservation order granted by the same court on 14 August 2025, over property linked to alleged members of the syndicate.
The controversial businessman has been implicated in alleged corruption involving Tembisa Hospital after slain whistleblower, Babita Deokaran, exposed suspected procurement irregularities.
Deokaran, who served as Chief Director of Financial Accounting at the Gauteng Department of Health, was gunned down outside her Johannesburg home in August 2021.
Maumela is alleged to have led a syndicate that siphoned millions from the hospital through fraudulent tenders as part of an alleged R2 billion corruption scheme.
The assets, valued at about R326 million, include properties in Cape Town, Hartbeespoort, Johannesburg and Durban.
They also include several luxury vehicles, among them four Lamborghinis, a Bentley and an Isuzu D-Max.
According to the NPA, the Specialised Audit Services (SAS) Unit found that 14 entities allegedly controlled by the ‘Maumela syndicate’ unlawfully benefited from contracts awarded by Tembisa Hospital worth more than R400 million.
National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Advocate Andy Mothibi, said the order demonstrates the NPA’s continued commitment to recovering the proceeds of crime and combating corruption.
“The pursuit of justice for the people of South Africa continues, particularly in the fight against corruption.”
Asset forfeiture isn’t enough:
1. Get Hangwani Maumela to #MadlangaCommission
2. Arrest him
3. Get @CyrilRamaphosa to appear before Madlanga
4. Arrest him too! https://t.co/uwJJY8PLE2— Madiepetsane Motaung (@madiepetsane2) July 20, 2026
GM… If businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela is the supposed mastermind behind the multibillion-rand tender fraud and looting syndicate at Tembisa Hospital, why’s he still not been criminally charged? Oh wait since when do we charge politically connected nephews… pic.twitter.com/xiYbaDuEtD
