The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng say months of protests outside the Constitutional Court have yet to yield feedback on the delayed Phala Phala judgment, raising concerns about accountability and transparency in South Africa’s justice system.

The matter stems from the 2020 theft of foreign currency from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s farm, a scandal that continues to divide political opinion and fuel demands for judicial clarity.

EFF supporters have been picketing outside the Constitutional Court every month since November, arguing that the prolonged delay risks normalising lawlessness and creating a perception of double standards.

Supporters gathered once again on Wednesday, with the party stating that more than a year and five months have passed without progress.

The party’s Gauteng spokesperson, Dumisani Baleni, said the party believed several institutions had failed to act decisively on the matter.

“Parliament protected him, and now it looks like the Constitutional Court is also refusing to release a judgment on the president,” he said.

Among those demonstrating were members of the EFF Youth Command, who warned that the delay is sending a dangerous message about accountability.

EFF Youth Command member, Terence Langa, said the situation risks creating a double standard, where ordinary citizens are punished while those in power are not held accountable.

Langa adds that young people are particularly concerned about the broader implications for the country.

Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court has since responded to EFF leader, Julius Malema, confirming that the judgment is at an advanced stage and is expected within a month.

EFF Gauteng chairperson, Nkululeko Dunga, also drew comparisons to a separate case involving suspended police officer Fannie Nkosi, who was found with over R50 000 under a mattress. Nkosi claimed the money was personal savings, but authorities suspect it was from unlawful activities.

The EFF has vowed to maintain its demonstrations until the Constitutional Court delivers its ruling, signalling that pressure on the judiciary is unlikely to ease in the coming weeks.
