The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have doubled down on their bid to remove National Assembly Speaker, Thoko Didiza, insisting they have submitted sufficient evidence for their motion of no confidence to proceed.
The move follows a letter from Deputy Speaker, Annelie Lotriet, who said the motion was “substantively in order” but required the EFF to substantiate two allegations relating to Didiza’s conduct before it could be placed on the Order Paper.
In its response, the EFF referred Parliament to an interview the Speaker gave, as well as a legal opinion, arguing that both support its claims.

However, the party maintains that Didiza “misled the public” by suggesting that legal advice obtained by the Impeachment Committee justified her decision to defend Parliament, and argues the opinion was obtained only after the decision had already been made.
The motion comes after the Speaker decided to abide by court proceedings in which President Cyril Ramaphosa is seeking to interdict the impeachment process. The Western Cape High Court is set to hear the matter on 15 and 16 July.
In its submission, the EFF said the evidence meets Parliament’s requirements and has urged that the motion be placed on the Order Paper without delay.
If scheduled, MPs will have to decide whether Didiza should remain Speaker of the National Assembly. Parliament has not yet confirmed when the motion will be debated.
