Two Mozambican nationals have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Ernst and Dina Marais in the Kruger National Park, marking a breakthrough in a case that marred the park’s 100-year history.
The suspects, aged 32 and 33, were arrested in Mozambique following a cross-border investigation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), Mozambican law enforcement, SANParks and conservation partners.
The Marais couple, aged 71 and 73, were last seen at the Pafuri Picnic Site in the Kruger National Park on 20 May. Their bodies were discovered a day later near Crooks Corner, with multiple stab wounds.
Their stolen Ford Ranger car was recovered in Chókwè, Mozambique, on 26 May, leading investigators to the first suspect who was arrested on Monday.
Police say the men face two counts of murder and hijacking, with further charges likely as investigations continue. The suspects made their first court appearance in Maputo on Wednesday.
Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised investigators for securing the arrests.
“The arrests mark a significant milestone in the investigation and demonstrate the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation in combating serious and violent crime,” she said.
Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister, Willie Aucamp, also welcomed the breakthrough, saying authorities had delivered on their promise to track down those responsible for the crime.
“South Africa will now start the formal extradition process to get the suspects to South Africa to stand trial for this heinous crime. I have engaged with my colleagues in the department of International Relations and Cooperation as well as Justice to emphasise the importance of securing the suspect’s return to South Africa,” Aucamp said.

While the investigation continues, authorities say the breakthrough sends a strong message that criminals cannot evade justice by crossing borders.
