Mpumalanga taxi boss, Joe Sibanyoni and his co-accused, have been granted bail of R70,000 each in the connection with extortion-related charges.
SIbanyoni, Mvimbi Masilela, Philemon Msiza and Bafana Oupa Sindane appeared in the Delmas Magistrates Court today after their extortion case was re-enrolled.
The group faces allegations of extorting a mining businessman of more than R2 million between 2022 and 2025, as investigations into the matter continue.
Former National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) head, Shaun Abrahams, who is representing some of the accused, has objected to the bail condition that the accused must hand over their devices.
“I mean, look, there must be a nexus between the evidence that the prosecution seeks and what’s contained on my clients’ devices. You know, and that has not been discussed with me. There’s no nexus.,” he said. “Unless they come to me with a search and seizure warrant, or they come to me and they provide the nexus, then I’m happy to reconsider the position. But without a court order, it’s not going to happen.”

Meanwhile, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Donald Mdhluli, says authorities have a strong case against the four accused.
Mdhluli also confirmed that police received information that the complainant fears for his life and believes he is under threat.
He says authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
“Together with the NPA, we have ensured that we have to because those are the most important people in this case, and we will ensure that there is nothing that happens. And also that if they are such, we encourage them to open a case because remember when the conditions were outlined, it was indicated that the suspects must not interfere with the witnesses, meaning that if they contravene, then we’ll have to make sure that the law is applied.”
