Local businesses and taxi drivers in Johannesburg have welcomed the reopening of Lilian Ngoyi Street, after a two-year closure.
The street, formerly Bree Street, was severely damaged by a methane gas explosion in July 2023, which killed one person and injured 48 others.
A local business owner noted that the two-year reconstruction period had kept customers away, as the road closure made it difficult for them to access shops along the street.
Taxi driver, Michael Matolomphekgwane, expressed relief at the reopening but voiced concern that the street’s reduced size will still negatively impact business.
The reopening marks the completion of the first phase of reconstruction, which cost over R90 million and faced delays, including disputes with the initial contractor.
The city has announced that the second phase of the R192 million project will begin soon, with a remaining budget of R110 million.
This phase will focus on beautifying the precinct with new greenery, street furniture, and other enhancements.
