Chairperson of the Solidarity Movement, Flip Buys, has rejected the high treason charges levelled against the lobby group as baseless.

Earlier, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), known as the Hawks, announced that four dockets have been opened against AfriForum and Solidarity members who are accused of spreading misleading information in the United States about some South African policies, including the Expropriation Act and the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act (Bela).

The organisation’s utterances raised the ire of many South Africans and led to tensions between Pretoria and Washington, with some Republican members of Congress pushing for South Africa’s exclusion from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as a reminder of “what happens when American interests are marginalised.”

Speaking to YNews, Buys rubbished the treason probe against his organisation as nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt by the Hawks.

He once again defended the organisation’s actions as a bid to ensure that the country isn’t destroyed with reckless policies.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is among those who are said to be behind the case.

Hawks Head, General Godfrey Lebeya, says they will not hesitate to arrest anyone should the NPA find that there is case to answer.

South Africans are divided on the matter.
