Self-proclaimed doctor, Matthew Lani, says he believes in second chances in a new TikTok video apologising to the country for all the claims he made about him being a medic.

Lani, who had gained a following after he started posting on social media platforms, TikTok, would do videos of him in hospital wearing scrubs and with a stethoscope. He would also give medical advice and even sell medication as he kept up his charade of being a medical doctor.

In October last year, he was arrested for impersonating a medic.

The charges were, however, later dropped with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) citing insufficient evidence as a reason for the decision.

Taking to TikTok again after months of a hiatus and at some point, pleading poverty, saying he didn’t even have a phone – Lani told his followers that fame had clouded his mind, leading to wrong decision-making.

The bogus doctor was first exposed by Bonolo Seleke in 2021 when she revealed his suspicious actions, where he pretended to be a medical doctor at Christiana Hospital in the North West.

She revealed that she left her job at the health institution after the Department of Health failed to deal with the matter.

Lani had also made said that he attended Wits University, which refuted the claims.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) also revealed that he was not registered with the body.

Despite the cloud, the 28-year-old seems to have not changed his ways. He announced that he will be hosting a TV show next year but quickly changed his story in the comment section of the post after he was questioned.
