Some South Africans have reacted nonchalantly to Chidimma Adetshina getting the first runner up prize at the Miss Universe pageant.
Since the announcement on Sunday, social media users have been going back and forth on the matter, with some congratulating her and others pointing out that she didn’t win the most coveted title.
The 23-year-old lost out to Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig, who became the first Dane to clinch the crown.
Despite this, however, Adetshina took the African and Oceania titles.
Adetshina has been in the spotlight after she changed her allegiance to Nigeria from South Africa, following controversy over her nationality.
She had originally entered Miss South Africa, but her dream was cut short after South Africans with a red marker questioned her nationality.
She then withdrew from the competition in August and was invited to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria, of which she won – thus landing up Mexico for the Miss Universe competition.
Adetshina has spoken of her pride at coming second in the competition, saying she made history.
The South African-born Adetshina might not be able to return to South Africa after her documents were revoked.
The now Miss Universe runner-up and her mother, Anabela Rungo, failed to make representations on why they should keep their South African Identity Documents (IDs) following alleged identity fraud by Rungo.
The fight over her between some Nigerians and South Africans played out on social media, just like how it has been since the unveiling of the identity fraud scandal.
Congratulations Chidimma Adetshina on achieving First Runner- up in #MissUniverse2024 and being crowned #MissUniverseAfrica and #Oceana. Your invincible hope, infragility and resilience should be inspiring to all young persons that find themselves caught up in adversity… https://t.co/ZzJISQtdG9 pic.twitter.com/80GJLXavyb

Chidimma Adetshina, stripped of her South African citizenship, took up the Nigerian nationality of her father, and on Saturday emerged the first runner-up at the Miss Universe 2024 Pageant held in Mexico. Revenge is a dish best served cold pic.twitter.com/b8mTFWwTm9

The point is more Nigerians come here to do crime than to do good things. worse u people are condoning it hence we are also judging u. There is no Nigerian that has ever said that what Chidimma family has done is wrong. Instead u r crucifying South Africans for not wanting crime.

That’s because they are doing it illegally. Look at the Chidimma case they steal local peoples identities. Look at the stats of undocumented foreigners in SA. It’s easier to commit crime when you can’t be traced. Hence they stay here illegally and commit crime. It’s really bad. pic.twitter.com/DRHUi1inKZ

How did Chidimma being a runner-up being an L to South Africa when this list exposes how Nigeria is a mediocre country? Had Chidimma didn’t post that video of her family celebrating, Nigeria wouldn’t even boast like how they’re boasting now https://t.co/eNqMGx5WvO

I guess it’s true that we live in your minds rent free,
The girl was representing Naija not SA, so celebrate without involving us— Nathi Jiyane (@lwethu_jiyane) November 17, 2024
South Africa isn’t humiliated. South Africa never wanted to be represented by someone who doesn’t value their country (immigrating illegally stealing the birthright of a true born descendant of South Africa). Yes, Sometimes villains win but not under the National flag of SA.

South Africa had no representation at this year’s finale after Miss SA, Mia Le Roux, withdrew due to severe vertigo that affected her balance, among others.
