The family of six-year-old Amantle Samane, who was brutally murdered in Orlando, Soweto, is demanding no bail for the man accused of her killing.
Amantle was laid to rest at Olifantsvlei Cemetery yesterday, leaving behind a community in grief.
The 24-year-old who is accused of her murder is a Mozambican national. He allegedly lured Amantle to a shack just metres away from her home, where the horrific crime took place.
He is set to apply for bail in the Protea Magistrate’s Court today.
Speaking at Amantle’s funeral service, the little girl’s uncle, Mmoloki Samane, thanked the community for their support during the search and retrieval of her body.
He’s described his niece as a shy and clever girl, who was curious about her surroundings.
The uncle has urged parents and guardians to be vigilant of their children even in their own back yards, emphasising the importance of keeping them safe.
The Johannesburg e Executive Mayor, Dada Morero, was one of the mourners.
He highlighted the devastating impact of violence on children’s lives and pledged to increase visible policing to ensure children’s safety in the city.
Community leaders and residents are demanding action, calling for improved street lighting, enhanced police presence, and community-led initiatives to protect children.
According to the South African Police Service, over 300 children were murdered in the country between April and June.
Amantle’s tragic death has sparked widespread outrage and concern about child safety.
Her death follows the tragic passing of six learners in Naledi, also in Soweto, earlier this month after they consumed suspected contaminated snacks.
Her family says today’s bail application will be a critical moment in the pursuit of justice for the young girl.
