It seems that award-winning singer, Tyla, could be out of favour with some South Africans following her support for Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina.
At the height of calls for a probe into Adetshina’s identity, the 22-year-old took to X, defending the then Miss SA contestant who pulled out of the competition amid the controversy.
Tyla expressed disappointed over the backlash and wished her well in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant.
I will always stand with South Africa, i just feel regardless of the opinions…
She was bullied and that’s what I don’t stand for.— Tyla (@Tyllaaaaaaa) August 10, 2024
The Grammy award winner’s words have now come back to haunt her after it emerged that she has been nominated for 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in the Best New Artist, Best R&B and Best Afrobeats categories for her song Water. She is up against the likes of Burna Boy, Chris Brown, Davido, Tems, Usher, Alicia Keys and SZA, amongst others.
Tyla has been nominated for three #VMAs this year. You can vote up to 20 times daily for each category she’s nominated in.

Following that announcement, many people took to X, saying she should rather ask Nigerians to vote for her.
Tyla claims to have more Nigerian fans than South African fans.
Let the “Nigerians” vote for her.
A slap in the face on South Africans that supported her from Day 1, Keep your vote its “Xenophobic”!
The support you people gave Tyla was for Nothing!

Others have, nonetheless, come out to defend the young trailblazer.
There’s no VMA award in South Africa, we win a lot of things but when it comes to music Nigeria stays beating us! Tyla is the only artist beating the whole Nigeria single handedly! Let’s make sure we keep the winning streak Mzansi! Remember that her awards will land at OR Tambo🇿🇦 pic.twitter.com/PqJLt7B0W2
