Some aggrieved Nigerians have labelled Chidimma Adetshina‘s win as a fraud, while others commended her resilience.
After months of controversy and debate, the former Miss SA contestant was finally crowned Miss Universe Nigeria on Saturday.
South Africans didn’t waste time finding the silver crown on the online shopping store Temu, where it appeared to be retailing for R76.
They compared it to the Mowana crown worn by the reigning Miss SA Mia le Roux, which cost R1.2 million and took about 80 hours to make from Nungu Diamonds.
Adetshina pulled out of the Miss SA pageant a few hours before the finale last month, following a backlash about whether she qualified to participate.
The 23-year-old has been embroiled in an ethnicity row which led to her abandoning the pageant in South Africa to walk the ramps of Nigeria.
Some Nigerian citizens took to Twitter to express dissatisfaction, saying Miss Universe Nigeria did not work for that crown.
“You people took your Miss Universe and gave it to Chidimma, I don’t know whether it’s because South Africa was contesting with you people on that, or what. This should be given to someone befitting. When did Chidimma do auditions to represent Taraba?”
Another citizen says Adetshina’s win is a slap in the face for the girls who put in all the hard work to make it to the top of the pageant.
After trending for weeks on end, Adetshina has thanked both South Africa and Nigeria for supporting her.
She says being crowned as a pageant queen has always been a dream and she is grateful for the second chance she got at achieving it.
“This crown is not for beauty, but it is a call for action and that is unity. “This journey has been a tough one for me and I am so proud of myself, and I am grateful for the love and support.”
