“Dating sites have become haven for criminals,” warns specialist investigator

Specialist investigator, Mike Bolhuis, has warned young people to stay away from dating sites, saying they've become a haven for criminals. He says they've received an overwhelming number of cases of young people who are lured and extorted on the sites. "We have found that also on these dating sites, the false identities and information theft is enormous. The social media world out there is a dangerous world." His remarks follow the kidnapping of an 18-year-old Wits student, who was […]

Yires urged to familiarise themselves with Biko’s teachings

As part of the Heritage Month celebrations in South Africa, which among others honours the memory of some of the country’s struggle icons, Professor of African politics at UNISA, Kealeboga Maphunye, is urging young people to familiarise themselves with what the Black Consciousness Movement leader, Steve Biko, stood for. OPINION | Truth invites enemies and diminishes friends

That there are two sides to a story is one thing, but assertions that there are two sides to truth do not follow to be convincing. And whether headlines to a story are good or bad is an area sub-editors are gifted with to enjoy the right of way to pass. Headlines may be unhelpful, but indicative of license the media world has gifted sub-editors with to wield. Truth though only has one side. If truth had many sides, chameleons […]

OPINION | Like Biko advocated – we must confront our demons without violence

September 12, 1977, holds profound lessons of struggle through a thinker, a struggle icon, a human philosopher and realist who was brutally murdered 46 years ago. It brings closer the privilege and the presence of mind of having been in the same space, four decades ago, of a man who when he learnt that Steve Bantu Biko took his last breath of life on that day, dropped everything where he was in Lesotho and rushed back to South Africa where […]
