Australia’s disciplined bowling attack sealed a dominant 214-run victory over South Africa on Day 5 of the Test in Durban, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 series.

The visitors laid their foundation for their victory earlier in the match, with Matt Renshaw producing a career-best Test knock of 190 to propel Australia to 390.

South Africa responded with 284, anchored by resilient knocks from David Bedingham and Aiden Markram, to leave Australia with a 106-run lead at the halfway mark.

Chasing a daunting target of 421, South Africa’s top order crumbled under the floodlights on Day 4, with Josh Hazlewood and part-timer Renshaw reducing the hosts to 102/4 at stumps.

Resuming the final morning at 102/4, South Africa faced an uphill battle, but Markram and Wiaan Mulder dug in to offer a period of resistance.

Markram scored a determined 75 off 237 deliveries to hold the innings together, while Mulder contributed 29 before falling to Hazlewood shortly before lunch.

South Africa’s resistance finally ended when Anrich Nortje top-edged a short delivery from Hazlewood, with Nathan Lyon pouching the catch at short cover to bowl South Africa out for 206.

Australia secured a comprehensive 214-run victory to take a 1-0 lead in the series, with the second Test scheduled to take place in Gqeberha.
