Tshuma plea deal stalls as UK murder suspect remains behind bars

Negotiations between the State and UK fugitive, Ndodana Tshuma, over a plea and sentence agreement have stalled, forcing another delay in his firearm-related case.

Tshuma remains behind bars while extradition proceedings continue over allegations that he murdered his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, and their two daughters, Natalie and Nala Tshuma, in Bedfordshire, England.

The British national was arrested in Kensington, Johannesburg, in June after the South African Police Service (SAPS), through INTERPOL, received a request from UK authorities to trace and apprehend him.

He is facing two separate legal processes in South Africa – extradition proceedings following a request from UK authorities and local charges relating to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Tshuma has since abandoned his bid for bail and remains in custody.

It is alleged that Tshuma intended to take his own life using the firearm found in his possession at the time of his arrest.

The 45-year-old appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where the State and defence failed to finalise the terms of the plea and sentence agreement.

Tshuma had previously pleaded guilty to the firearm-related charges, but discrepancies between his oral plea and the written agreement prompted the court to give both sides time to resolve the matter.

That process remains incomplete, with State prosecutor, Davis Mabunda, and defence lawyer, Chrispin Machingura, agreeing to postpone the case.

“We did agree with the defense ownership that the matter may be remanded until the 21st of October ownership, as the court pleases.”

Magistrate, Sindisiwe Malindi, has remanded Tshuma in custody until 21 October.

“So your matter is now adjourned again until the 21st of October 2026, whereby you will be brought before this court. If everything is in order and the agreement has been finally reached, we will proceed with your plea. So between now and the 21st of October, you will be kept in custody.”
