The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it is unlikely that the case involving seven senior police officers will be re-enrolled.

This comes after the NPA unconditionally withdrew charges against the officers, including Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo, Crime Intelligence CFO, Major General Philani Lushaba and Brigadier Dineo Mokwele.

The officials were charged with corruption and fraud in relation to Mokwele’s appointment at the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).

The charges were brought by suspended Member of Parliament and National Coloured Congress leader, Fadiel Adams.

NPA spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says that, in addition to withdrawing the case, the NPA has initiated disciplinary processes against three suspended IDAC officials implicated before the Commission over their alleged improper conduct in the matter.

“The NPA has started the process to reset IDAC, putting in place plans to reform and reposition the unit to discharge its mandate optimally. Amongst these reforms are the lifestyle audits that are currently underway, skills and qualifications audit of all employees of IDAC to ensure that the required skilled personnel are placed correctly and are fit for purpose, ensuring that there are processes that are put in place to enable a consistent way of dealing with matters.”

Brigadier Mokwele, who was at the centre of the controversy, says she is relieved to put this matter behind her, describing the past months as the most difficult time of her life.

“I entered public service, you know, with the belief that my skills and experience would contribute to nation-building. And instead I find myself being arrested, prosecuted, you know, and portrayed in a manner that I maintain does not resonate with, is inconsistent with who I am and the life I have built.”

“Watching my name become national news while I was still trying to understand what was happening was devastating. The impact was not only emotional and psychological, but it impacted me professionally and financially. But I’m grateful to my family for carrying this burden with me.”

Mokwele says the withdrawal of the charges will give her the freedom to start rebuilding her life.
