Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, says employers cannot blame staff shortages on the departure of foreign nationals, arguing that millions of South Africans are seeking work.

She says government has a database of more than seven million job seekers who can be matched with available opportunities.

Meth was speaking during a multidisciplinary labour inspection blitz in Johannesburg on Friday, involving officials from the departments of Employment and Labour and Home Affairs, as well as Occupational Health and Safety and City authorities.

The first stop was Siesta Butcher, where inspectors examined working conditions, working hours and possible safety violations.

Officials raised concerns about cramped rooms being used as office and storage space, including whether there was adequate ventilation.

Inspectors also checked building plans and whether alterations to the premises were properly authorised.

Meth says businesses will be given an opportunity to correct any violations, but those that continue to disregard the law could face further action.

Meth says government will also identify industries affected by the departure of foreign nationals and assist employers in accessing local job seekers through the Employment Services of South Africa database.

The inspections form part of intensified enforcement across Johannesburg, with authorities checking whether businesses are complying with labour, immigration, municipal and occupational health and safety regulations.
