Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says President Cyril Ramaphosa is closely monitoring the latest allegations involving the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Magwenya described the allegations surrounding the anti-corruption unit as a matter of serious concern.
The comments come amid mounting claims of misconduct within IDAC, including allegations of political interference, infighting among senior officials, irregular handling of high-profile corruption investigations, and concerns over the management of sensitive case dockets.
Earlier this week, head of IDAC, Advocate Andrea Johnson’s, testimony before the Madlanga Commission was postponed after she failed to appear, with her legal team informing the commission that she had been admitted to hospital.
Johnson’s alleged misconduct at the directorate remains under intense scrutiny before the commission. She has been accused of interfering in the handling of a 2018 assault investigation involving suspended Deputy Crime Intelligence head, Major-General Feroz Khan.
During his testimony, MK Party MP Vusi Tulane Shongwe, alleged that IDAC later appointed Johnson’s husband, Junaid, as a brigadier, after he was assigned to investigate the assault case.
Shongwe further alleged that Advocate Johnson served on the panel that interviewed and selected candidates for the brigadier post.
The allegations have raised questions about the directorate’s independence and its ability to effectively investigate corruption involving politically connected individuals.
However, senior investigator Brian Padayachee, on Wednesday rejected claims that the directorate operates outside its legal mandate.
Padayachee told the commission that IDAC operates strictly within the powers conferred on it under Section 71(a) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act.
He further dismissed claims that he was placed at IDAC to investigate Crime Intelligence head, Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, describing the claims as baseless.
