SAFA dismisses reports of Broos’ exit

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has dismissed reports that Hugo Broos has stepped down as Bafana Bafana head coach.

In a statement issued on Friday, SAFA described claims that the Belgian had left his post as “completely false”.

The statement comes after reports emerged suggesting Broos had confirmed his departure in an interview with Belgian publication, Voetbalnieuws.

Broos previously announced that he intends to retire after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a decision he first revealed last year.

“Broos remains as the head coach of Bafana Bafana and reports claiming the contrary are completely false,” SAFA said.

The association added that this is not the first time the 74-year-old has been linked with an exit following the national team’s success at a major tournament.

“In March 2024, Broos was said to be joining the Tunisian national team a few weeks after Bafana Bafana had won bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast,” the statement read.

SAFA also confirmed that Broos is currently at his home in Belgium and is expected to return to South Africa later this month.
