The United Rugby Championship (URC) citing commissioner for the match between Muster and the Lions, has decided not to charge Lions’ flanker, Sibabalwe Mahashe, over an allegation of spitting, citing a lack of evidence.
Munster replacement hooker, Diarmuid Barron, accused Mahashe of spitting in his mouth while both players were on the ground during Munster’s 24–17 victory over the Lions, an allegation Mahashe firmly denied.
Munster captain, Craig Casey, immediately reported the incident to referee, Andrea Piardi who referred the matter to the Television Match Official (TMO).
However, officials found no conclusive evidence to support the claim.
According to the citing commissioner, video footage was inconclusive and did not show any clear or obvious spitting action by Mahashe.
“The video evidence is inconclusive and there is no clear and obvious spitting action by 6 Lions (Mahashe). The audio statement by 16 Munster (Barron) is clear and he states that 6 Lions spat into his mouth but the audio statement from 6 Lions contradicts this,” the citing commissioner said in a statement.
“He states that he had trouble with his gum shield after the upright contact before the ruck. He categorically denied the accusation.”
The Lions will now turn their attention to their URC quarter-final against Leinster Rugby on 30 May.
