National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, says he has nothing to hide as controversy continues over the Medicare24 tender.
The country’s top cop, who appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today, is accused of violating the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) in the awarding of a SAPS tender to alleged underworld figure, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
These charges are linked to the alleged irregular awarding of a contract, valued at approximately R228 million to Medicare24, a company owned by Matlala.
The matter has been postponed to 13 May, where Masemola will appear alongside Matlala and 15 other accused.
Masemola has urged other officers not to be distracted, saying they must remain focused on their duties.
“I might be being dragged closer to serious criminals, which I don’t know, but they must stay positive, serve the people of South Africa, and look forward.”
“We have come to a close where we know what the root cause is and who’s behind organised crime in South Africa, and we are dealing with it. Let’s continue pushing in that direction.”

Masemola faces four counts of contravening the PFMA, with the state saying investigations are at an advanced stage.
The State says it is waiting for bank statements to finalise certain aspects of the financial probe.
Meanwhile, National Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, says Masemola will step aside once formally charged, with the final decision resting with President Cyril Ramaphosa.
She, however, says this is a defining moment for both the National Commissioner and the organisation, adding that SAPS must focus on honesty, reflection, and rebuilding rather than defensiveness.
General Fannie Masemola can’t be charged with Cat Matlala and his associates. IDAC has got this one wrong and the aim is to dent his image.

I never imagined I would see National Commissioner Fannie Masemola in court before Impalas Sibiya “Dokhuments”. We fully support NASCOM in this fight back. #MadlangaCommission #FannieMasemola #GarethMnisi

Yesterday, it was crime intelligence head, General Dumisani Khumalo in the dock.
Today, it’s National Commissioner Fannie Masemola. Tomorrow, it may be Lt. General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

In a country already drowning in crimes like murder and femicide. Fannie Masemola being charged is terrifying. If South African Police Service leadership is under suspicion then who is really protecting citizens .

Should he come back to his position he must thank God
It seems like they are removing him now, seems like it’s over 😒
Not easy to come back to your big position after attending these court cases

Now that Fannie Masemola has been formally charged, this is the perfect time for President to act.
Not just suspend him ..appoint General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as National Commissioner and begin restoring trust in SAPS.
South Africa needs leadership, not protection networks.… pic.twitter.com/GxkNIdzUGR
