More arrests are expected in the Inxiweni Primary School double-murder case, where principal Ruth Nozibele Tabu and clerk Nobantu Njombini were gunned down last Tuesday.

The widening investigation has intensified scrutiny on school security, unlicensed firearms, and rising violent crime in Thembisa.

Two suspects — Mogadi Hope Shongwe, a school employee, and Tuki Benjamin Maditsi — appeared in the Thembisa Magistrates Court on Monday facing double-murder charges. Police say more suspects will soon be added to the docket as the probe deepens.

In court, the pair’s cases were formally joined. The investigating officer told the court he could not verify Shongwe’s residential address after she allegedly submitted one containing only three digits. Her lawyer, Evelmé Reddy, said a corrected address would be provided.

NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said the address discrepancy contributed to the postponement, giving the state more time to prepare its bail arguments once the correct information is filed.

Tabu and Njombini were killed on school grounds while preparing for a meeting — raising serious concerns about safety measures in public schools. The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that although the school had an allocated security guard, he was not on duty at the time.

Gauteng Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said financial constraints have forced the department to reduce the number of security personnel in schools.

Mabona also confirmed that an internal disciplinary process against Shongwe — who is employed at the school — is under way and will continue alongside the criminal case.

The shooting has deepened fears among Tembisa residents, who say unlicensed firearms and violent crime are becoming increasingly common in the area. Community members say the murders have intensified anxiety about the safety of children and educators.

Community Safety official, Vusimuzi Vilakazi, said the incident has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood and highlighted the urgent need for stronger crime-prevention strategies.
