The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has raided the alleged residence of businessman Hangwani Maumela, who has been implicated in the R2.3 billion Tembisa Hospital fraud and corruption scandal.

The property — reportedly featuring a car wash and barber shop — is located in the affluent suburb of Sandhurst, Sandton.

According to an SIU report, Maumela who is also President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew, is alleged to have led a syndicate that siphoned over R800 million from Tembisa Hospital through fraudulent tenders, as part of a broader R2 billion corruption scheme.

The operation forms part of the SIU’s efforts to enforce investigative findings and ensure consequence management.

While details remain limited, investigators reportedly found signs of immense wealth, including three Lamborghinis, a massage parlour, and a fully equipped home salon. The high-end vehicles were later driven away without incident, while large trucks transported other seized items.

Later in the day, the SIU said more details will be shared later, as a legal settlement is being finalised following the raid.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit has previously secured court orders to seize all of Maumela’s assets — including his Sandton mansion and several homes in Cape Town and Durban — collectively valued at over R320 million.

SIU spokesperson, Ngwako Motsieng, said the Sandton raid is part of a broader operation linked to the ongoing Tembisa Hospital corruption probe.

Investigators say funds meant for healthcare were channeled through thousands of irregular purchase orders, with most goods never delivered.

The Sandhurst raid is part of a wider crackdown as the SIU continues tracing assets and exposing the complex fraud network involving senior officials at the Gauteng Department of Health and Tembisa Hospital.
