The man accused of killing Ekurhuleni Chief Auditor, Mpho Mafole, was out on bail at the time of the murder.

This emerged at the Kempton Magistrate Court, where 40-year-old Goodwill Ntshalintshali made his first appearance.

The state says Ntshalintshali is also facing another pending murder case where he allegedly fatally shot Bongani Mfihlo in September 2023.

He now stands accused of the assassination of Mafole, who was gunned down in Kempton Park after attending a work-related meeting.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) investigations revealed that Mafole was followed from the meeting.

“He was shot and declared dead at the scene. A witness later informed police about a suspicious vehicle in the area, which led authorities to launch an investigation that eventually pointed to the accused.”

Mafole was investigating alleged corruption linked to a R2 billion electricity revenue shortfall in the Ekhuruleni municipality.

His father, Kiki, says his son was attending an important meeting on the day he was gunned down.

He has described the late auditor as an honest, hardworking man who did not deserve to die in the manner that he did.

“On the day he was killed, he said, daddy, I have a crucial meeting and I must attend it, I don’t want to be late, that’s all he said. See you later, tell mom that I’m off now, but he never made it home.”

Kiki says his son had only been employed by the municipality for three months before his demise.

He added that the family will allow authorities to do their work as investigations continue.
