The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) says the continued killing of young people is an intolerable tragedy after some of its members were gunned down in Katlehong last night.
A group of young people, with the youngest victim aged 12, came under a hail of bullets while walking home from the memorial service of ANC member, Jeanette Magugu, who was brutally shot and killed outside her home in Katlehong, about a week ago.
Four people have since lost their lives in the tragedy, while three others remain in hospital.
While the motive behind the attack remains unknown at this stage, a suspect has since handed themselves over to police in connection with the drive-by shooting.
The suspect is expected to appear at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
The youth wing’s, Palesa Molefe, has called on police to intensify efforts to combat violent crime and the proliferation of illegal firearms in communities.
“We cannot continue to bury our youth while armed perpetrators terrorise our communities. Every life lost is a family shattered, a community traumatised and a future violently cut short.
“Our communities cannot remain hostage to violence, and young people must be able to gather, organise and participate in community life without fearing for their lives.”

Meanwhile, the ANC in Ekurhuleni has decribed the shooting as deeply disturbing and painful, particularly ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections.

“Given the circumstances surrounding the incident and its occurrence during a critical period ahead of the Local Government Elections, the ANC calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS), particularly the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), to conduct an urgent, thorough and impartial investigation.

“The investigation must establish the full circumstances and motive behind the attack, including whether it was politically motivated and whether there is any connection between this incident and the killing of Comrade Jeanette Magugu.”

The Gauteng Provincial Government has also condemned the shooting, saying no gathering, community event or place of mourning should become a scene of bloodshed and tragedy.
Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, has urged residents to work with law enforcement agencies by sharing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
“We must collectively reject violence and build communities where disputes are resolved peacefully, and human life is respected,” he said.
The matter has now been handed over to the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
