United States (US) death row inmate, Christa Pike, has regained consciousness and is speaking after surviving a botched execution in Tennessee, although her prognosis remains unclear.
The 50-year-old survived two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital at a Tennessee prison last week before being rushed to hospital in critical condition.
It is understood that Pike suffered severe damage to both arms during the failed execution.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her 19-year-old classmate, Colleen Slemmer.
Prosecutors say Pike and two teenage accomplices lured Slemmer to an abandoned steam plant, where she was tortured and fatally beaten.
Pike’s lawyers are calling for her death sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment, describing the failed execution as “chemical torture.”
They had previously requested that Pike be executed by firing squad or hanging, citing her small veins and a blood-clotting condition known as thrombocytopenia.
Meanwhile, Tennessee’s Correction Commissioner, Frank Strada, has resigned following the botched execution.
Strada says stepping down is in the state’s best interests as an investigation into what went wrong gets underway.
Tennessee Governor, Bill Lee, has also halted executions in the state for the remainder of the year and ordered an independent review of the incident.
Lee described the incident as ‘deeply disturbing’.
