Springbok assistant coach, Deon Davids and uncapped loose-forward Paul de Villiers, are eager to kick off the international season on a strong note.

Speaking in Johannesburg on Monday, Davids said the camp had built good momentum over the past week, with the coaching staff pleased with the progress as they moved closer to Saturday’s clash against  the Barbarians in Gqeberha.

“The energy in camp has been excellent,” he said. “We’ve seen a smooth transition from the alignment camps into this training environment. The younger players have settled in well alongside the more experienced members of the group, and everyone understands what is expected of them.

“The players have connected well and have worked hard together, so we’re looking forward to taking the next step this week.”

For De Villiers, who captained the Junior Springboks at youth level, the opportunity to be involved in the national set-up has been a valuable learning experience.

“It’s been an incredible experience so far,” said De Villiers. “The quality of players around me is outstanding, and there is always something to learn. The coaches have also been fantastic in helping us improve and understand what is required at this level.”
