A 19-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on Friday in connection with the killing of a fellow teenager in Braamfischerville, Soweto.
It is alleged that an 18-year-old boy was attacked with a panga and later succumbed to his injuries at a local clinic on Wednesday.
According to authorities, the deceased boy, who is a learner at a secondary school in Meadowlands, had left home to visit a friend in the area and never made it home.
It is alleged that the pair later went to another secondary school in the area, where the victim was attacked by unknown suspects.
Police spokesperson, Tintswalo Sibeko, says the motive for the attack is still unknown at this stage, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Gauteng Education MEC, Lebohang Maile, has called on law enforcement authorities to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book.
” As a province, we are deeply saddened and disturbed by this incident. No child should lose their life to violence, and no family should have to endure such pain.”
Meanwhile, community members in Braamfischerville say the killing of the teenager may be linked to gang-related violence.
Residents say gang rivalry has become increasingly common in the township, with many young people drawn into criminal activity.
