The decision by the Golden Globes Awards to allow films and television productions created by artificial intelligence to compete for awards has sparked mixed reactions on social media.

The organisation recently introduced updated eligibility rules to clarifying how AI-generated content will be treated in future award submissions.

Under the new guidelines for the 84th Golden Globes, set to take place in January 2027, the use of AI or generative AI will not automatically disqualify a project, provided human creative direction, artistic judgement, and authorship remain central throughout production.

The rules state that submissions will be assessed based on the extent to which creative direction, artistic decision-making, and execution originate from credited individuals, while AI may not replace the core creative contributions of human talent.

Projects in categories such as directing, writing, music, and animation will still qualify if the essential creative input comes from humans. However, performances created entirely by AI will not be eligible for awards consideration.

The move could significantly expand the range of eligible productions as streaming platforms and studios increasingly integrate AI technologies into filmmaking and television production.

The decision has triggered divided reactions online, with some social media users criticising the move as a threat to creativity and jobs in the entertainment industry.

While others have welcomed it as a reflection of the evolving future of film and television.

The Golden Globes also updated rules relating to non-English language and independent films.

The changes come just a week after the Academy Awards announced similar amendments to its own AI and international film eligibility criteria for the 99th Oscars.
