The entertainment industry and South Africa at large are mourning the loss of veteran actress, Cynthia Shange, who passed away today.
Her family confirmed that the 76-year-old passed away in the early hours of this morning at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal following an illness.
Shange made history when she became the first black woman to win the Miss South Africa title and went on to represent the country at the Miss World pageant in 1972.
Many will remember the entertainment trailblazer for her role in the first Black feature film Udeliwe (1975), where she starred alongside co-star Joe Mafela.
Shange further appeared in the SABC 2 soapie, Muvhango, adding to a decades-long career in television and film.
Her daughter, actress Nonhle Thema, confirmed the news on Instagram.
“With a heavy heart, I share the news of our Dear Mother. Please keep my family in your prayers during this difficult time,” Nonhle said.
“A graceful and compassionate soul whose presence brought warmth, dignity and kindness to all who knew her. ”
