Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says government is ‘disgusted’ by the conduct of some Nigerian nationals in the country following the unrest in KuGompo this week.

The city, formerly known as East London, descended into chaos when protesters took to the streets demanding that Nigerian national, Solomon Ogbonna Eziko, be dethroned.

Eziko was controversially crowned “King Igwe Na Ndigbo Na East London”, a move that sparked outrage among some residents who questioned the legitimacy of the title.

Briefing the media on Thursday after the Cabinet meeting, Ntshavheni described the coronation as a “mere kindergarten gimmick”.

More than 10 vehicles were torched, shops looted, and infrastructure destroyed during the unrest.

Ntshavheni says the government has engaged Nigerian authorities on the matter.

“Our heritage and customs must be respected by all, in particular our visitors. Cabinet expressed disgust of the so-called coronation of the Nigerian national chief  in Kukompo city in the Eastern Cape and indicated that it is a mere kindergarten gimmick  and has no legal effect.

“Cabinet confirmed that the establishment, recognition and functioning of any traditional leadership structure are strictly governed by the traditional and leadership act which provides clear and non-negotiable procedures for legitimacy and recognition.”

The minister says Cabinet also noted the apology from the Nigerian High Commission.

“We directed DIRCO to continue engaging with the High Commission on the unacceptable conduct of Nigerians in South Africa that is unbecoming of visitors, and we must remind them they are visitors in this  country,” she said.

Ntshavheni also expressed concern that legitimate grievances over this matter resulted in acts of violence and criminality.

“Cabinet reminds South Africans that the right to protest comes with responsibility. It must be exercised peacefully and within the confines of the law.”
