Bulls loose forward, Marco van Staden, will achieve a lifelong goal on Saturday when he makes his 100th appearance for the Pretoria franchise in their United Rugby Championship clash against the Stormers at Loftus Versfeld.

The Springbok forward has taken the long route to reach the landmark, progressing through club and varsity rugby before eventually cementing his place at professional level.

Van Staden has recently become a key figure in both the Bulls and national setups, thanks to his ability to operate effectively at flank and hooker.

“Because I filled that role with the Springboks last season, it was easier to move into it again,” he said ahead of the north-south derby against the Stormers.

“In general play it’s very similar. The big differences are the throwing and the scrumming. I’ve put in a lot of work on the scrums and on my lineout throwing,” he added.

Springbok coach, Rassie Erasmus, used Van Staden at hooker last season, and with injuries affecting the Bulls in that position, his versatility has provided valuable cover.

“I’m very comfortable doing both roles,” he added.
