The case against a Midrand couple accused of producing and distributing child sexual abuse material has intensified, with rights organisations and prosecutors highlighting the State’s extensive preparation ahead of their High Court trial.
Darren Wilken, 35, and his girlfriend, 25-year-old Tiona Moodley, appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where prosecutors confirmed nearly 1,000 charges against them. The case has now been transferred to the High Court, with pre-trial proceedings scheduled for 19 February.
The couple has been linked to a global child sexual abuse network following a US minor’s sextortion report, which prompted an international investigation involving the FBI and South African authorities.
During court proceedings, the State outlined the charges detailed in the final indictment.
Wilken, believed to be the mastermind of a vast dark-web operation, allegedly traded abusive images and videos of minors to clients worldwide. The State previously told the court that Wilken earned more than R3 million from the illicit trade between 2023 and 2024 , while Moodley, who is unemployed, received R1.5 million linked to the operation.
Police arrested Wilken earlier this year after discovering an estimated 10 million images and videos depicting child sexual abuse at his premises. Moodley, a web designer, was arrested days later in Houghton.
Magistrate Anna Oosthuizen reinforced Moodley’s bail conditions, barring her from contacting her mother, a key state witness listed as Witness 12.
Women and children’s rights organisations say the indictment marks a major step in what is considered South Africa’s largest child pornography and sexual abuse case.
Women and Men Against Child Abuse welcomed the development, noting it coincides with the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign. Director Miranda Jordan said the scale of the charges reflects the widespread harm caused.
The organisation emphasised that each count represents thousands of exploited children worldwide and urged the courts to deliver a strong verdict.
Moodley remains out on R15,000 bail, extended during her latest appearance, while Wilken remains in custody at Johannesburg’s Medium B Prison (Sun City). The couple is set to make their first High Court appearance on 19 February.
