Proteas Women skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, says she’s excited to play the first of three T20 Internationals against Ireland on Friday at Newlands stadium in Cape Town, one of world cricket’s most iconic venues.
The Proteas Women last played at Newlands in the final of the 2023 T20 World Cup which South Africa lost to Australia.
“First time playing here since that World Cup final, two or three years ago. I haven’t played here that much even though I’m from Cape Town. I am really looking forward to it,” said Wolvaardt.
The team has also been boosted by the return of former captain Dane van Niekerk, who recently reversed her international retirement. Wolvaardt highlighted Van Niekerk’s experience and willingness to contribute as a major advantage for the squad ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
“She’s been great so far. It looks like she just wants to contribute in any way she can,” said Wolvaardt.
“She has a lot of cricket knowledge, very smart cricketer. So, I think she has a lot to offer to the team, more than just her skills. It seems like she’s really prepared to do whatever she can for the team,” she added.
Wolvaardt also praised Van Niekerk’s leadership qualities, noting her value as a mentor in camp.
“So, I think as a captain as well, obviously, she’s done it for a lot of years. Any questions will be nice to sort of bounce off her, and it’s just nice to have her back.”
