Rulani Mokwena will face his former employers, Mamelodi Sundowns, after his new side Mouloudia Club d’Alger (MC Alger) were drawn in the same group as the Betway Premiership champions in a tough CAF Champions League lineup.
The draw, held on Monday afternoon in Johannesburg, produced a thrilling matchup — with Sundowns also set to meet familiar opponents Al Hilal of Sudan and Saint Eloi Lupopo of the DRC, who famously eliminated Orlando Pirates in the previous round.
Mokwena was sacked by Sundowns earlier this year despite leading the club to the 2024 league title and coming close to an unbeaten season.
Meanwhile, Sundowns captain Themba Zwane says he’s looking forward to reuniting with his former mentor on the continental stage.
“That’s the Champions League for you, you can’t choose who you want to play – but for our group? It’s an exciting group,” he said after their draw.
“I think there won’t be too much drama, there’s so much respect for him, he has done a lot for the club and we like him, he’s a good human being, he’s a good coach, we learnt so much from him as players,” he added.
“So I think we will welcome him with a good hand, 100% I am hoping that.”
