DJ Sumbody murder | No bail for alleged mastermind

Controversial businessman, Katiso “KT” Molefe, accused of masterminding the murder of popular musician Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka, will remiain behind bars after being denied bail by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Molefe, arrested in July, faces multiple charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

He is accused of orchestrating the November 2022 Woodmead shooting that claimed the lives of DJ Sumbody and two of his bodyguards.

The court also heard that Molefe was out on bail at the time of his arrest, in connection with a separate case involving the alleged murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart.

Three of Molefe’s co-accused have also been linked to the March 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody’s close friend, Hector “DJ Vintos” Buthelezi.

Magistrate, Reneir Boshoff, ruled that Molefe failed to prove exceptional circumstances justifying his release, adding that his alleged influence, access to resources, and links to other crime made him an unsuitable candidate for bail.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the ruling, saying the state’s case against Molefe is strong and supported by overwhelming evidence.

Meanwhile, police have increased security measures for investigating officers and state witnesses involved in the high-profile case.

Investigating Officer, Hlengiwe Mbele, confirmed that bodyguards have been assigned, while police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said such measures are crucial in ensuring justice is served.

Outside court, DJ Sumbody’s family expressed relief at the outcome.

Family spokesperson, Chad Thomas, said the ruling gives them hope that justice will prevail, despite the ongoing trauma they endure during court proceedings.
