Murder accused, Tiffany Meek, is set to learn her fate tomorrow, as the Roodepoort Magistrates Court prepares to deliver its judgment on her bail application.
The 31-year-old mother, is accused of murdering her 11-year-old son, Jayden-Lee, and defeating the ends of justice, among other charges.
Jayden-Lee’s bruised and half-naked body was discovered on May 14, a day after his mother reported him missing.
In his closing arguments, Meek’s lawyer, Noven Naidoo, argued that his client meets all legal requirements for bail, asserting that the state lacks sufficient evidence to secure a conviction.
In contrast, state prosecutor Linda Duma warned that granting Meek bail, especially given her intention to relocate to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), could complicate the case and hinder the judicial process.
Meek has informed the court that she can only afford bail set at R5,000.
Having been in custody since her arrest earlier this month, Meek continues to deny all charges, maintaining that she is being framed.
Her defence also criticised the police investigation with Naidoo highlighting inconsistencies in descriptions of Jayden-Lee’s school uniform and questioned why a nearby flat, where sniffer dogs reportedly detected a scent, was never searched.
He further urged the court not to be influenced by public opinion, noting that social media outrage has since diminished.
However, prosecutor Duma emphasized that the investigation is nearing completion and insisted that the evidence available will withstand scrutiny in court.
Meek has also pleaded for the case to be handed over to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) or Special Investigating Unit (SIU), expressing a lack of faith in the South African Police Service (SAPS).
