As the warm weather persists, some Joburg residents are at their wits end over the invasion of flies in their homes.

Some have even taken to social media to express their frustrations as the bugs sometimes end up on their food.

Experts say the warmer weather is providing the perfect breeding ground for the insects to breed at a faster rate.

Entomologist, Genevieve Theron, from the Agricultural Council of South Africa has advised people to keep food covered and ensure that all surfaces at their homes are clean.

Theron says South Africa has over 300 000 species of flies, contributing to the challenge of managing these pests.

She also pointed out that poor waste management, amongst others, also play a role in the increased fly populations.

Theron says with temperatures rising, their life cycles accelerate, making them reproduce in larger numbers.

Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service has warned of a heatwave across several parts of the country.

The weather and climate forecasting centre says Gauteng residents can expect high temperatures to last for most of the weekend.

Forecaster, Lehlohonolo Thobela, says there will be isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.
