MK Party Secretary General, Floyd Shivambu, has slammed the case against Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, saying it’s an abuse of state power by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration.

Party members came out in their numbers to support former President Jacob Zuma’s daughter, who made her first appearance in the Durban Magistrates Court.

Zuma-Sambudla is accused of instigating violence during the unrest in July 2021, which left over 300 people dead.

Protestors took to the streets in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, burning down and looting business after her father was jailed on charges of contempt of court.

During the unrest, a X account purported to have belong to the 42-year-old, shared several inflammatory posts.

Shivambu says Zuma-Sambudla is being mistreated like her father was during apartheid.

Zuma-Sambudla has been released on warning by the Durban Magistrates Court and the matter has been transferred to the Durban High Court for trial on 20 March.

In her affidavit, read by her representative Dali Mpofu, the MK Party MP stated her intention to take legal action against the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), saying the case against her was aimed at settling political scores with her father.

Another MK Party member, Bonginkosi Khanyile, says the case is meant to paint the party in a bad light, posturing it as an organisation that has members who are facing criminal charges.

Former president, Jacob Zuma, says his daughter is being targetted because they don’t like her, nor do they like him and the MK Party that he leads.

Zuma says he was also arrested for fighting for democracy.

On the other hand, Duduzane Zuma says his twin sister is innocent and had no hand in inciting any violence during the July 2021 unrest.

He also expressed confidence that justice will be served, describing her sister’s prosecution as not surprising as his family is always vilified.
