A sad start to the new year for the entertainment industry following the news of the passing of legendary musician, Winnie Khumalo.

According to reports, the 51-year-old singer passed away today at her home after a short illness.

Khumalo, known for hit songs such as ‘Live My Life’ and ‘Kulezontaba’, came into the music scene at the tender age of 15 as a backing vocalist for the late Brenda Fassie.

She’s also worked with Brothers of Peace (B.O.P), Bongo Maffin, Zonke Dikana and DJ Cleo, amongst other artists.

Her song ‘I Just Wanna Live My Life’, which was produced by music giant, Oskido, was nominated several times at the Channel O Music Awards and the South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

Khumalo also took up acting, snapping up roles in series Muvhango and Mponeng. She was also in a stage play titled, The Journey.

Last year, she made headlines when she revealed that her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo (who is also a musician), had been hospitalised after her friend allegedly poisoned her.
