The families of Rachel Kutumela’s alleged victims say they feel betrayed by the police officer who is in the dock for allegedly killing their loved ones for insurance payouts.
“We trusted her,” they said outside court where the 43-year-old police officer appeared today.
She was arrested yesterday for the murders of six community members in an insurance scam.
It is alleged that sergeant Kutumela fraudulently took out life and funeral insurance for the various victims and has since claimed R10 million as a sole beneficiary.
Absa, Standard bank, Clientele, Old Mutual, Assupol and Hollard are some of the financial institutions that Kutumela allegedly defrauded.
It is reported that Kutumela would dump the bodies of her victims in different areas after killing them.
“In one incident, a woman was burnt in her shack and in another, a man who was disabled was also discovered drowned in a dam.”
The family of slain, Sydney Montja, says he vanished without a trace for two weeks before he was discovered drowned in a dam.
Mmamoloko Mashabela, who is Sydney’s cousin, says after a frantic search they received a call telling them that their loved one’s body was in a dam.
“We called Rachel Kutumela as the police who was assisting us, and she came with other police officers. Rachel told us that she will take care of the burial costs, and she did indeed bury him. We didn’t even know that she had insured him, she only told us after the funeral. Till this day I can’t believe that she would do this to our family because we had such a close relationship with her,” explains Mashabela.
The officer faces six charges of murder, 12 of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
She faces a schedule six offence for premeditated murder.
Kutumela allegedly began her reign of terror in 2019.
The NPA in Limpopo says more arrests are imminent and it will be opposing Kutumela’s release on bail.
The 43-year-old will return to court next week Friday to apply for bail.
