As the country continues to celebrate women’s contribution to society, multi-award-winning producer, Nonhlanhla ‘Noni’ Khumalo, has urged young women not to give up on their dream to occupy any space.

Noni walked away with the Best Entertainment TV Producer Award at the prestigious Basadi in Music Awards on Saturday, barely four months since she ventured into television.

Noni has been in the entertainment industry for a decade now and thrives in helping young women climb up the ladder especially in the male-dominated space.

She says hard work and dedication are what sets one apart.

“I’ve dedicated my entire life to radio as a medium and here I am getting recognised for television. So, my message to young women is that they can’t give up.”

She also paid homage to the likes of DJ Zinhle, who held her first ever and successful music festival ZeeNation at the weekend, celebrating 20 years in the music industry.

Phenomenal women and pioneers graced the third edition of the wards that honour women in the entertainment industry.

Tyla won three awards for her global hit song Water, while DJ Zinhle took home the awards for DJ of the Year, Collaboration of the Year, and the coveted Trailblazer title.

Among some of those who walked away with the golden piece were Lwa Dlunkulu, Makhadzi, Kamo Mphela, Brenda Mtambo, Mercy Phakela and Zaza Mokhethi.

In the same breath, the entertainment industry is reeling from losing two iconic women this month.

Veteran actress, Connie Chiume, passed away due to a short illness last week.

This morning founder of the Crown Gospel Awards Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule passed away in the hospital after battling lung cancer.

Mbokazi-Nkambule was the first recipient of the Trailblazer title at the Basadi Music Awards when they started in 2022.

Khumalo says women like mam’Zanele, who created platforms for gospel artists to thrive, will forever be treasured.

“Running an awards ceremony is not easy, there are so many dynamics to an award ceremony and the challenges are never-ending.

“It is a tough space and people like abo mam Zanele who are creating such spaces have shown us that you don’t give up.”
