Education activist, Hendrick Makaneta, says scholar transport driver discovered drinking alcohol with learners failed to be a responsible adult.

Makaneta was reacting to the video, which has been widely shared on social media showing learners from Dawnview, in Germiston, being ushered out of a Quantum, in which alcohol was also discovered.

Speaking to YNews, Makaneta says such social ills need communities to work together.

Makaneta has also called on parents to be more hands on when procuring transport for their children.

He added that the Basic Education Department should look at vetting transport drivers.

According to research by Aware.org, 50% of teenagers in South Africa drink alcohol.

The non-profit organisation has reported that alcohol is one of the top reasons for death and health problems among teenagers aged 15 to 19 worldwide.

The NPO says half of the teenagers in South Africa have experimented with liquor.

“Research indicates that about 19.9% claim first drink by 13, highlighting that underage drinking is alarmingly prevalent in South Africa. These figures underscore the urgency of tackling this issue through awareness, education and community engagement.”

Social media users say this particular school has been problematic for any years, even in academics.
